March March March

It's been a busy month and there is lots to share!  So, here are recent illustrations for the Advocate accompanied by their process sketches:

Cover for our issue that published on Leap Day 2012

I've been venturing into coloring with watercolors as opposed to Photoshop, and so far I'm pretty happy with the results.  I'm also inking just about everything these days with a #3 brush and Higgins ink.  Pens still help me out a little, but I'm trying to go the path Will Eisner.  Exceptions to the ink and watercolor approach are the Leap Day cover, which I did all digitally, and the Obama piece, which I inked with the Pentel brush pen and then colored in Photoshop (because the Pentel ink bleeds when re-wetted, not the case with the marvelous Higgins waterproof).  I'm also trying to color more and more sketchbook work with watercolor to build up the skills.

In addition to illustrating, I also wrote for the April Fool's issue of the Advocate, a couple of pieces that are pretty amusing:

More Advocate Illos Hoohah!

The latest works for the paper and some warm up sketches.  Creepy sketches.

Artist Book: Project 1: The Primates

These are scans of my first project for the artist book class I'm taking this semester.  I learned a method of waxing paper, which is why the pages are translucent.  The cover is made of bark paper and the images are transfers from the Life nature books I've been drawing from recently.

Advocate Firsties for 2012

Hey y'all.
I'm really happy with my first two illustrations for the Advocate this year.  A strong start, if I may be so bold.  I'm making myself not be a wimp by inking with the brush pens as much as possible, and I think it's really improved the look of the work.  I'm also trying to rely more on the initial drawing on paper and less on the photoshop end of the the process.  Here are links to the articles, one about In N Out Burger coming to Colorado, and one about new year's resolutions.
Also included in today's edition are a warm-up portrait of Albus Brooks, some more animal drawings from Life Nature Library, and a couple of weird things I just did in my sketchbook because I felt like it.
Enjoy my friends, enjoy.
Blake
