Advocate Firsties for 2012

Hey y'all.

I'm really happy with my first two illustrations for the Advocate this year. A strong start, if I may be so bold. I'm making myself not be a wimp by inking with the brush pens as much as possible, and I think it's really improved the look of the work. I'm also trying to rely more on the initial drawing on paper and less on the photoshop end of the the process. Here are links to the articles, one about In N Out Burger coming to Colorado, and one about new year's resolutions.

Also included in today's edition are a warm-up portrait of Albus Brooks, some more animal drawings from Life Nature Library, and a couple of weird things I just did in my sketchbook because I felt like it.

I just put these on my website as well, but here are a couple more illustrations I've done for recent issues of The Advocate. October's been a pretty busy month so far with school, work, illustrating, and everything in between. It's been hard to stop and post!
The first one is for an article about education and the recession (and maybe even depression).
The second is about bachelorette parties.

I included the scans of the ink drawings as well. I've been pretty happy with how those have been coming along, getting more comfortable with the medium.

Political Illo's & PIP (Process in Process)

For my illustrations for the school paper I've been getting back into working digitally, but am still relying on pencil and pens for drawing. I'm using this opportunity to try and develop a process (or maybe a few perhaps) of working digitally that works well and quickly for me. For the portraits in last week's post, I just did pencil drawings and scanned them into photoshop, adjusted the levels to make the lines thick and clear, and then proceeded to paint. For these two illustrations I did the pencil drawing and then inked them with pens, scanned, adjusted, painted. I think they're working well so far, but I still have some tweaking to do to get the line quality I want. Hopefully I will get better at inking, too.

This is a painting/sketch I started last summer that sat around on my shelf for the school year. While working on some current projects, I applied a charcoal and acrylic medium glaze to the painting and thought I might go back into with some color. I never knew how to start it though because it worked so well as a monochrome. With some encouragement and affirmation from my pal Ryan, I decided to leave it as is. Hope you enjoy.

For my Intro to Art Education class (that was finished almost a month ago...geez) I made these little guys for our artist book assignment. It was a nice final project we got to do at the end after a hard semester of reading and writing papers. Lookit:

They each have three little graphite drawings (2"x2") with imagery derived from the concepts of learning, discovery, exploration and vision in the art classroom.

For those of you familiar with Shaun Tan, I was really inspired by his book The Arrival for this project.

It was fun to have another chance to revisit my book making skills. It had been quit a while since I had made any. The accordion pages are such a nice format and unfold to an elegant display.

Yesterday the sculpture from the previous post was completed and critiqued in my Sculpture 1 class.

Behold:

I think I'm naming it Departed.

It's wood, about 20" x 30" x 12," painted with mixtures of gesso, ground charcoal and acrylic gloss medium.

So...no posts for September, but I don't feel too bad about it because I've been so busy with school and work, and I really pleased with my sculpture. I've also started going to Denver West Prep middle school for my field experiences for teaching certification. I also have some small works from my Jewelry and Metalsmithing class that I will share when I get them back from gradings. I might try to make several posts in the near future to catch up on what I neglected to share through September, including my sketch book stuff and the completed beetle painting. We shall see.

This past week I started class at Metropolitan State College of Denver for K-12 teaching licensure. I'm taking two art studio classes, Sculpture I and Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing. In Sculpture I our first project (as well as the other two for the semester) is primarily in wood, specifically 2x4's for project one. Here is a page of studies for my idea, a large relief type sculpture about 2' tall by 3' wide.

August has been rushing by with a cruel gusto! Displayed are some items from my sketchbook, some I've been meaning to share for quite some time. I've also been working on my beetle painting, which is almost finished so I hope to share that soon. The day job at DIA is tiring and time consuming, but I'm still trying to enrich my bus rides and breaks with drawing and reading, as well as food and sleep when necessary. Time is just stretched thin and is about to get thinner as I start school for teaching certification next week. These are trying but exciting times. I'm ready for my favorite season of autumn, which will be upon us soon.

This past Sunday night, Dori and I lost our dear little rat, Gustav. Things are very sad around our place as we try to adjust to life without our handsome little friend.
Here is one of the last sketches I made of him, as he cuddled with his brother, Bernard.

I went out this morning to enjoy some summer weather and to paint this trolley car down by the Platte River. It actually still runs on a route by the Aquarium, the Children's Museum, and REI.

Here's a cell phone shot of a smaller sketch with the car in the background:

The large one was actually done on watercolor paper taped to a board. I just sat and worked until it pulled away to take folks up and down the river.

First Tries

Howdy, howdy, howdy!

Above are my first attempts at watercolor painting on location. I recently acquired what I like to refer to as my "Musser Kit." This consists of a few portable water brush pens (though I only bought one to begin with) and a small plastic water color palette with a few choice pigments, plastic bags for secure backpacking, a few well used paper towels, and of course, my current sketchbook. I've also seen a lot of similar equipment used on the Urban Sketchers blog I've been visiting quite frequently lately, so I've been itching to have a go at it.
Proud of my in and out attack at Meininger's art supplies, I sprung for only the essentials to begin with. The PreRaphealite palette of Indian Yellow, Alizirin Crimson and Ultramarine in small tubes of Grumbacher were the only pigments I allowed to start. It presented some challenges in mixing a bright green so prominent in the summer grass and leaves, but otherwise I love the richness and warmth these three colors make in addition to being beautifully vibrant and transparent. I might make things easier by adding a bit of green gouache for the desired color and a nice bit of opacity. It'll just be nice to have more color on this blog and in my sketchbook, not to mention painting more often and on the go. More soon, cheers!

Working at DIA

I started a new job at the airport last week, and it's been a great opportunity to draw and study. I've been going up to the terminals on my breaks to sit and draw the people waiting for their flights. There's also all of great vehicles and views around DIA that are interesting to study, like the bag trucks and the architecture, the tunnels and nooks and crannies. I'll definitely be making lots of posts of sketches from my time there!

Friday afternoon Andy met me at my place and we walked down to the Platte River to do a quick plein air painting. I was especially excited because I'd been yearning a long time to paint some of the awesome scenery around my apartment in the highlands just north of downtown Denver. We got a choice spot on a rock that juts out into the river, giving us an unobstructed view of the pedestrian bridge. Here is a cell phone photo of our local:

I've been really into Lucian Freud's work lately, so while at the library the other day I checked out one of his books and did a copy of his portrait, Gaz.

It's definitely one of my favorites by him. Gaz, a Soho club musician, looks like quite the character, and Freud describes him as such in an interview. Freud says, "[he] was sort of ludicrous. He was always making difficulties, but they were basically economic, so I didn't mind." He also quipped, "...The thing is, he was boring and fascinating at the same time."

Today I ventured out into the world on my bicycle to go to a job fair for some jobs at DIA. To help protect my resume, and as general good practice, I brought along my sketchbook. While waiting for a preliminary interview, I had a fair amount of time to draw some of my fellow job hunters.

During my interview, I brought up that I was a recent grad of Rmcad and my enthusiasm for drawing and painting. I offered to show her my sketchbook and she was delighted to look through it. It was a great ice breaker and confidence boost for the rest of the interview.
So, here's to hoping art helped me get a full time job that pays me more than the lowest amount legally allowed. Cheers!

Still Life: Bananas and Tulips

As I walked by the table under our kitchen window, I saw these sitting there and was instantly inspired to paint them. The positioning was already there; I don't know if I subconsciously arranged them the day before to make a nice still life, but all I had to do was removed a few pieces of mail and a tupperware container and I had my composition.
I had got the tulips for Dori's birthday and had wanted to paint them before they withered away. Though Tulips are her favorite flower, Dori is disgusted by bananas, so there's a nice wee bit of irony to the picture.

Plein Air with Musser

I was holding out on posting until I heard from the Pernod contest in hopes that I would have good news to share, but it turned out to be in vain. Although I was a finalist, I didn't place in the contest (but congratulations to those who did). My Threadless design also didn't get a very high rating, so I doubt that it will be printed. So, back to the drawing board...or table.
On a more positive note, what better way to ward of those art rejection blues than to do some therapeutic plein air painting? The answer, of course, is that there is no better way. Yesterday, Andy Musser and I went painting at the Lakewood Heritage Center just west of Bel Mar. Below you can see our painting post, our subject, and Andy's fine acrylic painting. We didn't know what that little green shelter was supposed to be used for, but it made for a great impromptu studio.

This week I have a few less hours at Sears Westland, so I hope to get some more painting and drawing done and post some more life drawings to get this blog caught up. I've been working on a couple of acrylic on canvas illustrations, so those will show up here soon.

Life Drawings (Part One)

I've been going to free life drawing sessions at Rmcad the past few Thursdays with my fellow Illustrator Andy Musser. Here are a few choice cuts from last week's session:

I hadn't done too much life drawing with pencil since we always had to use vine charcoal in class, but I ended up really enjoying it. I was inspired to try it out by Andrew Wyeth's pencil preliminary studies for his portrait paintings after looking at his autobiography. I'll post some more life drawings soon from this week's session where we had to improvise after our model didn't show.

Pernard Absinthe Contest

This is a digital painting (along with the pencil drawing) of my submission to the Pernod Absinthe "Creator Of" art contest. The only requirement was the work use 1805, the year of Pernod's creation, somehow in the picture.

Before holiday travels, I was at a Starbucks reading before work when I overheard this exchanging of words between a customer and one of the baristas:

I thought it was pretty funny. The hat was for some sports team the barista apparently didn't approve of, and the burn slam was pretty unexpected. Those two, another barista and me got a good laugh out of it.

Following the Starbucks theme, this other drawing is just one I did the other day on one of the Starbucks rewards brochures. Dori and I were hanging around down town and I didn't have any paper with me. I don't know what this guy's problem is, though. I'd like a free drink.

BFA hooray!

So, due to the calamity of travels and visits during the holiday season I haven't posted in a while. I know, right? Not even to share that I graduated? Yes, I received my degree in Illustration from Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design on December 18th, 2009 ( a whole month ago).

This is me and my fiance, Dori in front of my grad show display on the Rmcad campus. All the work from the show is on my website. It's a big relief to be done, but now I have to find work and keep busy with art projects so my skills don't atrophy into oblivion! Ergo, I pledge for the new year to update this blog at least once a week with drawings and such. If I fail, you can make me eat a fistful of mayonaise or something.
In addition to traveling home for a holiday visit, my friend Brandon rode back to Denver with Dori and me. He got to visit for a little over a week before he had to head back to Illinois to return to the U of I. One thing we got to do was go to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science! In this picture, the T-Rex at the entrance looks very frightened of Brandon and Dori.

I'll put up some drawings soon. I plan to scan in a bunch of the drawings I do while bored at my jearb at Sears Westland. The shoe department has its lows, I tell you what.

Business and Postcards

For my grad show at Rmcad, I had some business and postcards printed through overnightprints.com. I thought they were pretty nifty so I thought I'd share them here! The Girantula postcard is 4"x 6" and looks quite fierce! They had me worried, though. I received them in the mail only an hour before I had to leave for the show opening.

The Flying Bear

To get things started, I'm very excited to share my recent creation: the flying bear! He's a sculpey model (with a little help from wood, wire and tape) I made for my Grad Portfolio class. He is ideally a grizzly and sparrow mix, and will soon have a paint job that better reflects sparrow markings and colors. He was just given a quick brushing up for class critique after his late night bake session.

The idea of the flying bear came to me in a dream a couple of summers ago. I dreamed a valley village of stick huts on a sunny but misty morning. The atmosphere was thick with evaporating dew, but warm brilliant colors and bright sunshine streamed through. Suddenly, incredible flying bears came down from the surrounding mountains in a fierce aerial gallop, swooping down amongst the villagers and snatching up the bewildered children.
